Become an Engineer

Now that you’ve explored engineering and the endless possibilities that it can offer you, what do you do next?

If you want to pursue an engineering education and career, find out what high school courses you’ll need to take to be accepted into a post-secondary engineering program. Even if you haven’t completely settled on engineering, taking those required courses in high school will at least keep that door open. In many cases, a guidance counsellor or university counsellor at your high school can help you decide what those courses might be.

Once you complete high school, earn an engineering degree from an accredited post-secondary institution. There are 281 accredited engineering programs at 43 post-secondary institutions in Canada, and they span the wide range of engineering disciplines.

By completing your degree in an accredited program, you’re already one step closer to earning your engineering licence. Accredited engineering programs satisfy the academic requirements to become a licensed engineer. You’ll also need to get some work experience before you can apply for your licence. To do this, register with the engineering regulator in your province or territory as an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.)*. E.I.T. programs can guide and assist you in acquiring your work experience, including annual reviews to ensure that you’re on the right track to getting your licence.

With your engineering degree in hand, and your work experience under your belt, you’re ready to apply for your engineering licence with your provincial or territorial engineering regulator. Once you’ve obtained your licence, you’ll become a professional engineer (P.Eng.) and will embark on a promising career that will shape the community around you!
